Decisions

One of the most important things about painting, I find, is the ability to make the right decisions. For example do you start with darker colours, or lighter colours. What colour to have as a base colour. When to decide that things are going pear shaped and some corrective actions need to be done. The more you paint, the more confident you become in decision making.
That is why I think painting can be a great discipline for people, even if they don't really enjoy it, or initially, they think they are not good at it. But I am sure after time, not only do you get better at it, but it helps you to practice making decisions. And over time, the whole process becomes rewarding and well worth it.
